Start a Conversation

I recently came across a social media post asking for favorite methods to stir up a conversation. This question seemed interesting enough to warrant a post.

For business-related conversations, LinkedIn questions, and LinkedIn groups still seem to be the best path to an interesting conversation. These are great platforms for quick exposure, past the limitations of your immediate network. Most people that participate in these groups are business-savvy and eager to participate.

If you have regulars that you engage with on Twitter and Facebook, the results there can be productive as well. The Facebook questions feature can have some interesting, productive results. Google plus can also offer some reach through the questions feature.

Past the platform, the question should resonate with people. This can be accomplished in a few ways. Maybe it can spark debate or controversy (think political). Maybe it’s a widely discussed topic that effects a large audience (think S.E.O or marketing/branding for businesses).

If you are looking to incite social media engagement, the biggest thing is to talk about the things that your audience cares about. Know what your audience and customers are looking for, and you can go a long way toward filling those needs.

It’s also important to have a strong message. Well written content with a thought provoking message will produce better results than content with spelling and grammar errors. Make sure your post meets these standards.

Not every post is going to carry the results you hope for. But if you continuously post quality content that matters to people, the conversations will follow.
